Obituary : Ian Lennox
Posted by Richard on 2007/8/10 13:36:39 (591 reads)

With the unexpected passing of Ian (John) Lennox (81), on Wednesday July 18, the town lost a quiet-natured and gifted gentleman, whose journalistic and business career was inextricably linked to the town’s popular newspaper, spanning one hundred fascinating years of local reporting.

Ian Lennox was very proud of being the last owner and editor of the Beith Supplement, leading the paper to its centenary and somewhat paradoxically, in the same year, overseeing the closure of the business with the Supplement incorporated into the pages of its friendly rival, the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald.

Barrmill : John Raeside
Posted by Richard on 2007/7/17 17:07:05 (1174 reads)

The Barrmill Flyer, John Raeside, was back in top-notch motor cycle racing action last weekend at the Knockhill Circuit. Following his last race in June in which he was badly let down by his bikes in the 400 and 600 series, his luck held on this occasion.

In the formula 400 races he came home safely in 4th and 5th position. In the formula 400 production races he was again in top form finishing 2nd in both races. These excellent results put the Flyer back in contention for the Scottish championships. The Barrmill speedster’s next outing is during the week of August 13 - 18 when he takes part in the Ulster Grand Prix at Dundroden.

Back In Time : Gurdie Remembered
Posted by Richard on 2007/7/17 17:41:55 (820 reads)

Looking back in time and remembering is always humbling and revealing, very often highlighting the far-reaching changes in Garnock Valley social life occurring in a few short years.

The history of the Gurdie Row, formerly located between Beith and Longbar and adjacent to Whitestanes Farm, is close to the heart of Kilbirnie’s Bill Cairns (61), who lived there as a boy together with his parents, Bill (Sen.) and Betty, elder brother, Tom, younger brothers Jackie and Gordon and younger sisters Annette and Maureen. The baby of the family, Angela, was born after the family moved to Kilbirnie.
